Here’s a little something I think you should know about me; I root for the underdogs. Be it in sports or in politics or in whatever, if it’s the little guys who are going up against Goliath, the little guys have my back. Which is why I root for mid-majors when it comes to college sports.
My #1 team is the UAB Blazers. Where’s UAB, you may ask? They’re in Birmingham, AL…which is coincidentally my hometown. Funny how that works, huh? Anyway, I started rooting for them when I realized how they were being ignored by most of the state. So, all it took was that lightbulb to turn on in my head before I decided to eschew my fandom for that school in Tuscaloosa to the Southside Boys and girls. I don’t regret that decision in the least, BTW.
My #2 team (a very close #2) is the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen. The Mids are there for one reason: I served 11 years in the World’s Greatest Navy, and I’ll always be proud to root for them. Every game they win is a win for this country, and those men and women deserve nothing less than our undying respect.
So, there you have it. In the state of Alabama, where Alabama football reigns supreme, I gleefully told the powers that be to go fly a kite in a thunderstorm with gasoline boxers on.
